Waypoints | STOPS ALONG THE WAY
Plan your route with FlightPrep.com:
MontaukToronto,

Montauk, NY: KMTP
One of the best features of this beach-side runway is that it is truly a summer day-trip with no rental car required. And that's a good thing, because in this part of Long Island during the summer months, even a cab will cost $25 to take you anywhere.

Flying to Montauk Airport (MTP) takes you over the north fork of Long Island. Your approach is typically a left pattern to land on runway 24, bringing you just over the top a grass-covered dune perched at the approach end of the runway.

Once you tie down, you can walk the taxiway to the eastern edge of the airport, around that same dune, and there you are-park your flip-flops and umbrella just about anywhere for some of the best sea-side relaxation in the northeast. Bring a lunch and you can maximize your time on the beach before you have to pack up and head home.

Heading out, again you'll likely use Runway 24, which takes you out over the Montauk Yacht Club and Lake Montauk. Just remember as you taxi out that your fellow aviators will be using the taxiway to walk back to their airplanes.

Toronto, Canada: CYTZ
For a trip that's a point-to-point destination for pilots from Boston to Chicago, head to Toronto this summer for a great overnight or weekend excursion that doesn't even feel like you're visiting another country.

Toronto has a very ethnically-diverse community, and the summer is filled with numerous street fairs and festivals designed to celebrate the city's many different cultures.

The best landing is at City Centre Airport, (CYTZ), which is on a small island almost at the base of the famed CN Tower. Simply follow the lake shore, head for the tower, and you'll see the 4,000-foot runway 8 stretching from one end of the island to the other almost at the base of the tower.

Because Toronto city officials have refused to recognize the airport by building a bridge, you must take a ferry to cross the hundred or so yards of water to reach the taxi stand on the mainland. Tokens are available from the FBO

For a quaint hide-away, stay at the Old Mill Inn & Spa, a boutique spa resort which sits on the ruins of an 1834 grist mill. It is within the city limits, tucked away between a nature conservatory and a busy suburban neighborhood of Toronto.
