Duluth, MN: DYT, DLH
There’s more to do here than ride snow mobiles and visit Cirrus. This bustling town in northern Minnesota, sandwiched between the rugged Minnesota wilderness and the western edge of Lake Superior, offers many great places to stay and eat, and some rich history for the intrepid tourist.

The downtown waterfront area has been revitalized in recent years with more than a dozen restaurants, pubs and ice cream shops, as well several moderately-priced hotels.

The city has a rich history, first as a fur-trading post, then as a mining community, and then as a shipping port were goods were exchanged between ocean-going ships from the great lakes and rail road cars heading west.

Despite this rugged beginnings the city as an elegant charm and a touch of class. Bellisio’s, on the waterfront near the base of the spectacular Aerial Lift Bridge, is an outstanding Italian restaurant and wine bar that features more than 4,000 bottles and a menu that would surprise even the most jaded New Yorker.

This northern California city a great western base-camp before flying through the Donner pass into Reno or Lake Tahoe.

The Mather Golf Course, on short final to runway 22L/R at Mather Airport, offers excellent golf within a short drive of the airport. Trajen, the main

fairways that were originally designed for the Air Force base there (hence the long drives and wide fairways).

Sacramento is also home to the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento. The museum features 21 lavishly restored locomotives and cars, some dating back to 1862.

On weekends from April through September, old-time steam locomotives depart from the Central Pacific Freight Depot, two block away in Old Sacramento for a six-mile trip along the Sacramento River.

Next time you’re in the area, instead of ducking into Clermont County airport for a hot dog at Sporty’s, try nearby Lunken Field, “Sunken Lunken” as the locals call it, for a view of Cincinnati at its best.

Nestled into a valley on the eastern side of the city, Lunken provides easy access to the quaint village Mariemont, home of the historic Mariemont Inn.

If you visit Cincinnati for business or pleasure, avoid the bland, boxy downtown hotels and check into this Tudor inn that has rooms decorated with antiques, hard-wood headboards and imported tapestries. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and its restaurant, the National Exemplar, offers an excellent menu complemented by a reasonable wine list.

The Inn is also just minutes away from other excellent restaurants in nearby villages, like the Precinct on Delta Avenue, or Primavista.
