Waypoints | STOPS ALONG THE WAY

Tunica, MS: 30M, UTA
Just south of the busy Memphis airspace lies one of the south’s most happening gambling destinations, Tunica, Mississippi, which boasts nine top casinos, and enough fine restaurants and local diversions to keep your whole family occupied.

Sundance Square
Tunica is one of the south’s success stories, rising from an impoverished farming community on the Mississippi River Delta to become one of the great tourist destinations of the state.

If gambling is not your speed, there is still plenty to do in Tunica. The Casino Factory Shoppes, on Highway 61 across from the Grand Casino Tunica, offer outstanding outlet shopping with prices that are 30 to 70 percent off retail. Stores that have outlets there include Nautica, Casual Corner, Reebock, and Big Dogs. Main Street in Tunica boasts more than a dozen antique and specialty shops, offering a great place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon walk.

Tunica has recently become home to an extensive outdoor rec-reation center, the Tunica National Golf & Tennis Center. This new facility features a championship, 18-hole golf course, as well as six clay tennis courts, all right in the heart of the city’s casino district.

The city of Tunica offers plenty of dining options, with more than 50 restaurants of all varieties all within a short walk or drive of the casinos.

For the most unique accommodations, by-pass the big casinos and stay in one of the local hotels or bed and breakfasts that call Tunica home. One of the most delightful places to stay is the Columns, a turn-of-the-century Colonial Revival mansion that features guest rooms with gas fireplaces and whirlpools.

Fredonia, NY: DKK

Not much goes on in this little village perched on the edge of Lake Erie on Northwestern New York. But if you’re looking for a quite place to get away for a day or two of watching the sun set across the lake, smelling fresh cut grass and just hiding from the world, then this is one stop you’ll want to make.

Fredonia is mid-way between Erie, Pennsylvania, and Buffalo, New York. In the winter during periods of relatively low ceilings, flying from Cleveland, to Erie, to Fredonia/Dunkirk, and across to Albany will give VFR pilots a low-altitude way to get around the mountains in Pennsylvania to points in the Northeast.

And this little hamlet, just a few miles north of Erie, is a great place to stop for the night.

The “happening” hotel in town is the Sheraton Harborfront, which sits directly on the lake and in the summer features live music on the patio and dock overlooking the water.

The folks at Dunkirk Aviation are extremely friendly and can help you find a good meal on short notice. One of the main tourist attractions in area is the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse, which is open April through December and features quarters for the lighthouse keeper, as well as numerous civil war items, including boats and cannons.
