Monterey, CA: KMRY
This beautiful, seaside town offers a rich view of history coupled with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Widely known for its “Cannery Row,” a restored waterfront district that was made famous by John Steinbeck, this picturesque city is now a budding tourist hub offering a wide array of restaurants, specialty shops and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The aquarium hosts more than 550 different species of aquatic life in 100 tanks that combined use roughly 2,000 gallons of sea water.
If you have an interest in the sea, this is the place to be. You can watch the tides change from your window at the elegant Monterey Hotel, which is wedged between historic Main Street and the Pacific Ocean, then walk a couple of blocks to the Sardine Factory, one of the most elegant dining experiences in northern California.
After a sumptuous dinner served by experienced waiters, you can sit at the bar and enjoy an after dinner beverage where Clint Eastwood shot “Play Misty For Me,” or you can get a private tour of the restaurant’s wine cellar to see vintages dating back to the late 1800s. A great weekend destination for west-coast travelers.
Stowe, VT: KMVL
This is a great time to get out and explore Stowe. The area is best known for its excellent skiing, with 13 lifts serving 48 trails on more than 480 acres of mountain. While the peaks here are not massive by western standards—just 4,395 feet—Stowe offers beginner, intermediate and experienced ski runs, the longest of which is a respectable 3.7 miles long.
After a day on the slopes you can bed down at the luxurious, 170-year-old Green Mountain Inn in the heart of this historic town, and enjoy shopping at the area’s local shops and galleries.

Latrobe, PA: KLBE
Latrobe is a great place to stop whether for fuel, an overnight or even a weekend retreat. The Arnold Palmer Airport is home to DeNunzio’s Italian Chophouse & Sinatra Bar, an excellent Italian steakhouse with tables that overlook the airport runways. Famed golfer (and pilot) Arnold Palmer hails from Latrobe, as does the Latrobe Brewing Company, the original brewer of Rolling Rock Beer. Accommodations at local hotels are reasonable, $55 to $100 a night.
Ashland, OR: KS03
If you have a bent for the Bard, you should drop in on this quaint town in south-western Oregon, where the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has made its home since 1935. The festival encompasses 11 different productions in three local theaters, starting in late February and ending near the end of October.
Other local activities include winery and art gallery tours, and there is excellent skiing and snow-boarding on the nearby Mt. Ashland, a 7,500-foot-tall mountain with four chair lifts and 23 trails.
The perfect home base for your visit to Ashland is the Ashland Springs Hotel, a 1925-era resort that underwent extensive renovations in 2000. The resort’s restaurant, Lark’s, features home-cooking paired with an outstanding wine list that will please nearly every palate.
