Monmouth Plantation
Southern comfort takes on new meaning in Natchez, Mississippi. This small town north of New Orleans features historic shops and hours of strolling through peaceful, quiet streets. And if you’re coming to town to browse or to buy, there’s no better place to stay than the Monmouth Plantation.
A stay here is time spent enjoying ol’ fashioned southern opulence. You’ll be situated just four short blocks from the historic downtown, but a world away from all your day-to-day cares.
Built in 1818 as a private residence, this intimate resort was and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Condé Nast’s 2006 Gold List, for its luxurious accommodations and outstanding dining. Best of all, it’s just 10 miles from Hardy-Anders Field, (KHEZ), and rental cars are available from Enterprise with advance reservations.
There are just 30 guest rooms and 14 suites on the property, each carefully decorated with an eye for the flair and style of southern grandeur and opulence. Elegant carpets host four-post canopied beds, antique furniture and decorations. Some rooms have whirlpool baths and working fireplaces; all are no smoking and offer free wireless Internet access. A free southern breakfast is also included, but dinner is the signature event at this lovely and elegant resort.
Each night, dining guests gather in the Quitman Study for drinks and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Dinner then moves to the lavish dining room for a five-course repast including entrées such as grilled arctic sea bass with artichoke; roasted red pepper ragout, basil oil and kalamata olive dust; or a ridiculously sinful filet of beef with sun-dried tomato demi-glace and gorgonzola cheese.

Top the meal off with the restaurant’s signature crème brulee and a nice bottle of wine, and you are set for the evening.
If you’d like to explore the local nightlife, Natchez offers some of the most authentic southern cooking around, with nearly 20 local favorites sure to please any taste.
Natchez is the oldest civilized settlement on the Mississippi River older than New Orleans by two years and because of its rich history as a hub and one-time state capital, it offers a view into pre-Civil War life that is unlike any other in the country.
This wonderful ambiance and historic charm make the Monmouth Plantation an ideal get-away for busy travelers, and that’s also what makes it our pick for this month’s resort spotlight.
