The Mount Washington Resort At Bretton Woods
East coast skiiers can kick off the winter sports season this year at one of the most luxurious, family-friendly resorts in the northeast, the Mount Washington Resort At Bretton Woods.
The resort offers four different places to stay, the most spectacular of which is the elegant Mount Washington Hotel. The hotel first opened in 1902 and offers 199 well-appointed rooms, many of which offer breath-taking views of the New Hampshire mountains.
For a more intimate stay, check out the Bretton Arms Country Inn, which offers 34 rooms and suites, or, for a traditional “ski lodge” experience, check out the Lodge at Bretton Woods, which is also on the magnificent resort property. There are also townhomes available at the resort for rent or purchase.
Dining is a world-class event at the resort, which offers nine on-site restaurants and five bars in an effort to please virtually every traveler’s whim and fancy. Choices range from the decidedly formal dining room at the Mount Washington Hotel, which offers delicacies such as Wellfleet oysters gratinée and truffle-seared quail breast, to the family-friendly Darby’s Pizzeria, right across the street from the hotel.
For outdoor adventure, you won't find better skiing in the east than at the 434 acres of slopes at Bretton Woods. Once known as a good beginners mountain, Bretton Woods is now the fastest growing resort in the northeast, with 101 trails and glades, nine lifts (including four high-speed quad lifts) spanning two mountain peaks, Mount Rosebrook and West Mountain.
Trails are pretty evenly divided between beginner, intermediate and advanced, with fully 92 percent of the trails featuring snow-making capabilities.

In addition to Alpine skiing, the resort features miles of trails for Nordic skiing, and all mountain trails are open to snowboarders. There is also a 500-foot accelerator half-pipe and a terrain park that are both open for snowboarding and skiing.
Guests will find the mountain as child-friendly as the hotels, with ski schools for children of all ages, and a nursery at the base lodge open for children ages two months to five years.
All of this family-friendly, outdoor winter fun is available just a short flight from major east-coast cities for pilots landing at Twin Mountain Airport (8B2) or Mount Washington Regional (HIE). Which is why we picked this wonderful resort as our this issue’s spotlight.
