The Sunriver Resort
This romantic fly-in destination mid-way between Bend and Eugene Oregon is sure to please aviator and spouse alike.
This resort boasts its own, 5,500-foot runway with two instrument approaches, and is one of the only airports where bell service will pick your luggage up at the airplane and take it to your room.
Both AVGAS and Jet-A are available at the Sunriver Airport (S21).
Sunriver Resort originally was a dry lake bed that was acquired in 1943 by the U.S. Army and used as a military training camp.
In 1965, the land was turned over to private developers who built the resort and a planned residential community. The resort was purchased by its current owners in 1993, and has undergone extensive renovations to keep its luxurious accommodations in line with the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Today the resort offers three golf courses, a teaching academy and a golf practice center, three swimming pools, an indoor lap pool, and five outdoor spas. There are also 28 tennis courts, miles of hiking and biking paths, whitewater rafting, and the nearby Mt. Bachelor ski resort with more than 70 runs designed to please skiers of all skill levels.
But not all of the activities at Sunriver run at a frenetic pace. To soothe your tortured body after a hard day on the slopes or whacking golf balls across the majestic links, you can enjoy a therapeutic massage or relaxing facial in the on-site spa facility, designed with relaxation and pleasure in mind.
As the sun goes down, you’ll enjoy elegant dining at the spectacular Meadows dining room, which offers picturesque views of the sun as it sets across the neighboring countryside, paired with some of the best northwest cuisine and an extensive, award-winning wine list.

Another fabulous choice is the Grille at Crosswater, an elegant, family-style dining room with wood-beamed ceilings that specializes in delicacies such as Kobe beef and lamb OssoBucco. You can stop in at the Owl’s Nest for an evening night cap, or grab a cup of coffee at the Merchant Trader in the lower level of the Sunriver Lodge.
The Sunriver resort is a great destination any time of year, and it’s especially nice for golfing or just a romantic getaway during this time of year, when temperatures are more mild and the winter chill has yet to hit the region. And that's why it's our pick for this issue’s resort spotlight.
