Sandestin Resort
For one of the coolest, family-friendly destinations on the east coast, head south to Destin, Florida, home of this mega-beachside resort that caters to children of all ages.
The resort sits on 2,400 acres of land along side the Gulf of Mexico, and includes more than seven of miles beach and harbor-front property. There are more than 1,400 different room styles spread out across more than 30 distinct “neighborhoods” within the resort property.
Many of the rooms offer spectacular views of the village or the Gulf of Mexico, with its emerald blue waters and stunning sunsets. The sand on the resort's pristine beaches is so white that during the rationing of World War II, some folks passed it off as sugar.
The resort features its own Village of Baytowne Warf, which is a 28-acre pedestrian village offering more than 40 specialty shops and resorts overlooking the Choctawhatchee Bay.
You can hit the links at one of the four championship golf courses that run throughout the property. There are also 15 tennis courts for the tennis enthusiast, as well as miles of hiking and biking trails that will give you a great workout to start or end your day. There are even fishing excursions that will keep you preoccupied for hours in the quest to land, “the big one.”
The Sandestin Resort truly caters to children, going beyond the typical daycare and occasional child's playground to offer a comprehensive suite of offerings geared toward both children and teenagers. There are special programs for children that include golf school, sailing lessons, tennis lessons and even cooking classes targeted at the younger set.

There are also a variety of activities geared for teens, including
rock climbing, a water slide, special spa programs, cooking classes
and nature walks.
Dining is an outrageous experience at the Sandestin, with more than 19 of the area's top restaurants right on the property. For the most elegant dining experience, check out Finz, which features fresh seafood like grouper with jumbo lump crab meat served in a saffron cream sauce, served in an elegant dining room that overlooks the Gulf and its sandy white beaches.
For a pleasant, family-friendly get-away where you can enjoy the sun and feel the warm sand between your toes, spend a week at the Sandestin. It's one of our favorites, and the reason why it's this issue's resort spotlight.
