The Sagamore
Eager for a birds-eye view of natures changing colors this fall? Youll find no more luxurious
perch from which to enjoy the autumn leaves than the Greenbrier, a stately hideaway in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, that at one time was earmarked as a secret alternative home of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack.
Nowadays, the 6,500-acre resort, nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, offers a less harried, extremely elegant Modified American Plan vacation. Accommodations in all of the resorts 800 rooms includes breakfast and dinner; lunch can be purchased on the property or in the nearby village.
The original Greenbrier was built in 1780, and the property was taken over by the C&O Railway in 1910. In 1960, the U.S. government worked with the railway to develop a top-secret bunker beneath a new wing that was added to the building.

The plan was for Congress to occupy rooms at the resort during a nuclear crisis, then descend into the bunker if Washington came under attack. In 1996, the Greenbrier opened the bunker for public tours.

The resort provides easy general aviation access through the nearby Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB).
