perch from which to enjoy the autumn leaves than the Greenbrier, a stately hideaway in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, that at one time was earmarked as a secret alternative home of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack.

Nowadays, the 6,500-acre resort, nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, offers a less harried, extremely elegant “Modified American Plan” vacation. Accommodations in all of the resort’s 800 rooms includes breakfast and dinner; lunch can be purchased on the property or in the nearby village.

The original Greenbrier was built in 1780, and the property was taken over by the C&O Railway in 1910. In 1960, the U.S. government worked with the railway to develop a top-secret “bunker” beneath a new wing that was added to the building.

The plan was for Congress to occupy rooms at the resort during a nuclear crisis, then descend into the bunker if Washington came under attack. In 1996, the Greenbrier opened the bunker for public tours.

The resort provides easy general aviation access through the nearby Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB).

Know of a great resort or hotel that makes for a perfect home away from home? If so, send us your feedback.

Outdoor activities at the Greenbrier include golf on three championship courses, tennis on 10 courts (five indoors, five outdoors). For a more rugged excursion, there’s kayaking, hiking and mountain biking on 35 miles of wooded trails, horseback riding, fishing, skeet and trap shooting at the gun club, and the region’s only Land Rover driving school. There is also a full spa for relaxation after a hard day at play.

Greenbrier - DinnerChoices at meal time range from the elegant main dining room and the Tavern Room to the casual dining Sam Snead’s restaurant at the golf club. Nightly entertainment is provided in the main dining room, Tavern Room, and Slammin’ Sammy’s next to Sam Snead’s restaurant.

The entire family will enjoy the opulence, history and wealth of activities offered by this beautiful retreat. And that’s why it wins distinction as our Nest of the Month.
