The Sagamore
Nestled on its own 72-acre island in Lake George, deep in the Adirondack mountains of upper
New York state, is a luxury hideaway known to few, but loved by all who visit.
The Sagamore opened in 1883, offering an oasis for the rich and famous longing for a reclusive summer romp and escape from New York City. Since those early days, it has woven its way through history as one of the northeasts more elegantly rustic destinations.
Because of its remote location, most visitors drive to Sagamore more than four hours from Manhattan or three from Montreal. But general aviation travelers enjoy an special advantage, landing at a seaplane base on Lake George itself, or nearby Glens Falls airport (GFL).
This historic resort offers 350 rooms with lake or garden views in the main building and nearby Lodges. Suites feature a fireplace and a couch that pulls out into a queen-size bed for family accommodations, and rooms are dressed in early American or Adirondack décor.
The 18-hole golf course was built in 1928, with challenging narrow fairways woven through the beautiful wooded countryside.
The full-service, luxury spa offers a variety of treatments to realign body and soul. Services range from massage therapy, including aromatherapy and an Adirondack Hot Stone Massage, to acupuncture and Shiatsu. There is also a sauna, whirlpool and fitness center.
The resort has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a private beach, and water sports including kayaking, fishing and boating. The Sagamore has licensed scuba dive instructors and equipment rental onsite for dive excursions and dive training. There is also a childrens program, called the TeePee Club, which offers youngsters a variety of educational and fun activities, giving parents an opportunity to enjoy the resorts more mature amenities.
Dining at the Sagamore runs the gamut from a casual pub with burgers and nachos, to the ridiculously elegant Trillium, the resorts premier, four-star restaurant. Children under seven are not permitted at Trillium, and appropriate evening attire, including jackets and collared shirts for men, is required. For a special dining option, the
