The Sun Valley Resort
If you’re trying to squeeze in some late-season skiing or just looking for a place to gaze upon some of the most beautiful mountain scenery on earth, you’ll want to plan a week-long getaway at the Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho.
This exclusive yet family-friendly resort was created in 1937 and sits amid 4,000 splendidly wooded acres sprawled across the Idaho Rocky Mountains. The small town of Sun Valley, which has sprung up around the resort, is frequently visited by celebrities of all types, looking for a quiet respite from life. The resort is just 12 miles from the Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN).
In addition to world-class skiing on 78 ski runs spread across two mountains, the resort offers world-class golf on an 18-hole course that was rated by Golf Digest as the best in Idaho. There is also year-round swimming at three indoor pools, horseback riding, a complete spa, and day care to keep the little ones occupied while you undertake more challenging grown-up exploits.
The two main mountains within the resort are Bald Mountain, renowned for its challenging constant pitch descent of 3,400 feet, and Dollar Mountain, which was part of the original resort property.
The resort property offers nearly 500 places to stay, ranging from luxurious rooms at the historic Sun Valley Lodge (built in 1936) to cozy rooms at the Sun Valley Inn, which is located at the heart of the village. There are also condominium and apartment rentals offering accommodations for up to 10 people, as well as six intimate cottages designed to make you feel truly alone with the mountain.

There are 16 dining choices just on the resort property and on the mountain. They range from the quaint Konditorei, which offers pastries and light sandwiches with a European flair, to the formal Lodge dining room, where you can enjoy delicacies such as elk loin with huckle berries, shallots and butternut squash puree, while being serenaded by the house trio of musicians. For a fun night out, tackle Idaho trout or lamb at the Ram Restaurant while challenging the live piano player to remember your favorite song from high school.
This time of year is typically late ski season at Sun Valley, but the air will be warmer and the climate more friendly for outdoor activities than during the colder winter months. All of these qualities blend perfectly to make Sun Valley Resort one of our favorite resorts.
