Amelia Island Plantation
Although many visitors to Floridas Amelia Island have heard of the islands Ritz Carlton, the greater luxury is found further south on the lovely Amelia Island Plantation, a 1,300-acre resort community that every April plays host to the Bausch & Lomb Womens Tennis Championships.
The Plantation once made up all 5,000 acres of thhis 14-mile long by 7-mile wide island that was purchased from a Union Carbide. Throughout its history, the Plantation has stuck to a theme of building in harmony with nature, which gives this resort its rustic feel while catering to every pleasure of each and every guest.
The Plantation features the Amelia Inn & Beach Club hotels, with 249, beach-front rooms, as well as a 418 villas ranging in style and layout from a standard hotel room to one, two or three bedroom villas suites. Many visitors like the resort so much, they purchase villas for year-round use, then allow the resort to rent them out to help defray the cost of ownership.
Although the property is spread-out, you can find your way around on foot, by bicycle, or using the resorts shuttle system.
The resort boasts three, 18-hole championship golf courses, the most enjoyable of which is the famed Long Point course. This 6,775-yard, Par 72 course winds its way from grassy marshlands through a thick oak and pine forest before opening up on three breath-taking holes situated on dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
After an afternoon on the links, you can enjoy a couples massage at the Plantations full-service spa, which offers relaxing spa and ionotherapy treatments in a natural atmosphere. The building features floor-to-ceiling windows, but has special window shades that allow you to see out, but no one can see in.
Theres also a wonderful Watsu treatment pool, where a massage therapist will lead you through a relaxing water therapy session amid soft music and the glow of fragranced candles.

Dining at the resort is an experience not to be missed. Outstanding sea food and excellent wines await you at the Verandah restaurant, a wonderfully-casual fine dining establishment on the property. For an outstanding burger, visit the aviation-themed Falcons Nest. Just off the property, visit the eclectic PLAE, which stands for People Laughing And Eating.
But of course, the best feature of the Plantation is its beach, where you can walk through the surft and collect sea shells, or catch the failing sun on a wind-swep balcony to the backdrop of pounding waves.
