The Château Élan

If you think a winery has to be based in France or California to bring exquisite pleasure, you’ll find a welcome surprise at Chateau Elan, a luxury resort presiding 3,500 secluded acres just north of Atlanta.

Chateau Elan opened in 1984 as a winery, and 200-acres of grapes make it one of the largest wine producers in Georgia. Today this lakeside resort property features a full-service spa, 63 holes of golf, eight restaurants, and 274 luxury rooms.

NOTM - VineyardBetter still, the resort is minutes from three GA airports: Gwinnett County (LZU), Winder-Barrow (WDR), Jackson County (19A).

This resort is the project of entrepreneurs Don and Nancy Panoz, who in 1969 founded the Elan Corporation, a pharmaceutical company based in Ireland. On a visit to Elan’s research facility in Georgia, the couple discovered a wine made from indigenous muscadine grapes, and set out to produce this unique wine.

NOTM - SpaShould you choose to immerse yourself in the resort’s 33,000-square-foot spa, you can stay in one of 14 individually-decorated theme rooms within the spa section of the resort, and dine at the healthful Fleur-de-lis, which overlooks the lake.

Golfers can be equally-immersed, bunking in one of the resort’s golf villas on the 15th fairway of The Chateau Course.

NOTM - Golfing Activities at the Chateau range from athletic to cultured. Explore seven miles of bicycle trails on the resort property, or go horseback riding at the equestrian center. For a less-active amusement, tour the onsite winery and indulge in a wine-tasting.

You’ll have no troubling finding a meal to please your palate at the resort’s eight restaurants. In addition to Fleur-de-lis, the resort features several different menu choices that provide variety and excitement.

For the finest in modern French cuisine, visit the intimate Le Clos for a two-hour, seven-course dining event. Or if your tastes are more mediterranean,

visit the Carriage House, located in a restored 1886 Victorian residence. You can enjoy fine irish cuisine at Paddy’s Irish Pub, or dine under a beautiful glass atrium atVersailles, which offers a lunch and breakfast buffet, with a la carte dining in the evening.

Chateau Elan provides a wonderful island of civility for those of us who lead harried lives, and its location in the new south of Georgia, make it an ideal spot for our pick as this month’s Nest of the Month.
