This Federal-style structure with massive 30-foot columns sits on 700 feet of Lake Otsego. This lake is the "Glimmerglass" made famous by the James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales." A stay at this national historic landmark is reminiscent of a bygone era when life wasn't so hectic. This is where you can move at a more leisurely pace.
Recreational activities include skeet shooting, canoeing, fishing, golfing, tennis, biking, horseback riding, and a fitness center. Baseball fans will enjoy the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which is within easy walking distance of the hotel. History buffs will enjoy the Fenimore Art Museum with personal memorabilia of Cooper, who used the town for many of his stories, including his classic, "Last of the Mohicans." When it comes time to dine, guests have several choices. The main dining room offers a five-course dinner menu with candlelight and piano music. Gentlemen are required to wear jackets here. The Hawkeye Bar and Grill is more informal. Both feature a varied menu. And for those who like to "trip the light fantastic," the Templeton Lounge offers live music and dancing six nights a week.

John Stickney, who made his fortune in coal mining and the Pennsylvania Railroad, spared no expense when construction was started in 1900. Two hundred and fifty Italian craftsman were brought in to build the most luxurious hotel of its day. Their first job, before applying their skills in masonry and woodworking to the Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture, was to build their own accommodations. The very latest construction methods were used including a steel superstructure, which was unprecedented at that time. Today, the hotel continues to operate its own telephone system and post office.
Doors opened on July 28, 1902 with 350 staff ready to cater to guests. Three rail stations serviced Bretton Woods, with as many as 50 cars a day delivering dignitaries and celebrities. Today, you can dine in one of those rail stations.
