Most everyone has heard of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, or the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

But how many golfers knew that there was a hall of fame dedicated to their favorite sport? The last time your car broke down and the auto club came to tow your car, did the driver inform you that there is a national museum dedicated to tow trucks? There really is.

50 Flying Halls of Fame Did you realize that there is a bicycling hall of fame? A distance running hall of fame? Trap-shooting? Quilters? There is even a National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame. Bet you didn’t know that, did you?

The fact is, no matter what hobby or interest you or your family and friends have, there’s probably a national museum or hall of fame somewhere in America dedicated to celebrating and preserving that special interest. And you know what else? Almost all of them are within a few minutes of a good general aviation airport.

So pack your bags, grab your charts and get ready to go exploring some of the less-traveled destinations in aviation. We’ve carefully selected the top 50 halls of fame designed to meet a wide range of interests. Now all you have to do is go visit them!

The Northeast

National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame

Located in the former Washington Bath House, this unique venue celebrates the innovators of American Professional Dance through its growing collection of photographs, videos, artifacts, costumes, biographies and archives. The hall of fame has inducted more than 30 dancers, choreographers, teachers, designers, critics and patrons who have made contributions to the art. In addition to the archives, library and museum, the Hall also has an interactive children’s Discovery Room, where kids can try on costumes, dance on stage and play instruments. The National Women’s Hall of FameThe National Women’s Hall of Fame

The hall of fame is located in Seneca Falls, site of the first women’s rights convention in 1848. Since its inception in 1969, more than 200 women were inducted into the hall of fame. After a major fundraising project in 1979, the hall received a permanent home in the heart of the Historic District to display the permanent exhibits and artifacts of this country’s greatest women. The hall remains dedicated to educating the public and preserving the history of women in America. Among others, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, scientist Dr. Rita Colwell and architect Maya Lin were announced as the 2005 inductees. National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum

This unique sport museum educates guests on the history of soccer while highlighting some of the sport’s most important moments in history and featuring the athletes that made the game great. The hall is packed with soccer memorabilia, including the world’s oldest soccer ball, historic game uniforms and the 1930 World Cup medals, to name just a few. The National Toy Museum and Hall of Fame

Located in the Strong Museum, this venue was rated one of the Nation’s Top Ten Children’s Museums by Child magazine. Here kids and adults can play, imagine, invent and explore in an interactive environment that encourages learning and discovery. Known as the National Museum of Play, the museum houses the most extensive collection of toys, dolls, dollhouses, advertisements, home crafts and souvenirs, and home furnishings, in the world. The hall recognizes toys that have entertained multiple generations and achieved significant recognition in the world of play. The National Museum of Racing And Hall of Fame

The non-profit organization was started in 1950 to celebrate the history of the horses, trainers and jockeys whose accomplishments have shown thoroughbred racing at its best. The hall highlights one of America’s oldest sports through its elaborate equine pictures, art collections, trophies, silks and thoroughbred memorabilia. The museum gives visitors a taste of the sights and sounds of racing through interactive exhibits and fun projects for the whole family. The Discovery Paddock teaches children about racing through hands-on activities and demonstrations, including a ride on a mock racehorse, dressed in jockey gear and hammering a shoe on a mock-horse’s hoof. The Int’l Boxing Hall of Fame

What started as a city’s love for two of its hometown boys, grew into an international shrine to honor some of the most celebrated athletes in sports history. The official hall was completed in 1989 and has since expanded to include another wing and an events pavilion. Every year the hall inducts a number of prestigious boxers into the hall at the annual four-day celebration. The museum works to chronicle and preserve the rich heritage of boxing and present visitors with artifacts and memorabilia from some of their favorite boxers. National Baseball Hall of Fame

This great hall of fame holds the most extensive collection of baseball memorabilia in the world. Founded in 1939, the National Baseball Library contains 2.6 million artifacts, kept in climate-controlled areas and preserved by a professional staff of archival experts. The library and museum diligently collect items that represent all aspects of the game – both on the field and off. The museum’s collection includes 35,000 three-dimensional artifacts, such as bats, balls, gloves and caps and 130,000 baseball cards. The library’s photo and film collections have captured historic moments in time from Hollywood movies and footage from the late 19th century to images of great players and ballparks. National Distance Running Hall of Fame

Distance running is an all-inclusive sport that can be enjoyed by both the novice and the professional. This hall of fame was established to honor the amazing athletes of this sport who set the records and achieved the impossible. Visitors will learn about the history of running through the stories of the spectators and the athletes themselves, with a collection of pictures, awards and memorabilia. Utica is home to The Boilermaker 15K Road Race, the largest 15K in the nation. Although it takes place in a small city, it continues to rank as one of Runner's Worlds' Top 100 Races. Robot Hall of Fame

The Robot Hall of Fame is located in Carnegie Mellon University and was created in 2003 to recognize landmark accomplishments in robotic technology. The hall of fame honors two categories of robots – those from science as well as science fiction. Robots from science are those that have served a specific purpose and performed the task they were created to do. Robots from science fiction are fictional robots that have inspired creators to invent real robots that help and entertain the public. The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame

The Bicycling Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of cycling and promoting the health and fitness benefits of the sport. Cycling has a long-standing history in the United States. Back in the 19th and 20th centuries, as many as 30,000 spectators would attend cycling races to see their favorite athletes. The Museum has historical photographs, trophies and medals, newspaper clippings, videos and memorabilia on display for visitors that were collected over the years and donated from inductees and friends. New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum

The newly-renovated hall of fame recently opened its doors to reveal new galleries and exhibits that showcase one of the most comprehensive aviation artifact collections. The displays emphasize specific themes, including military, space and commercial aviation. A series of interactive displays and flight simulators offer a bit of excitement for visitors of all ages. Lacrosse Museum & National Hall of Fame

This hall of fame was established to celebrate the exceptional men and women who played, coached or contributed to the success of lacrosse. Int’l Rock-a-Billy Hall of Fame Museum

Creators felt it was fitting to establish this hall of fame in Jackson, because it is located between Memphis – home of rock n’ roll and blues – and Nashville – home of country and hillbilly music. The museum captures the history of rockabilly music with rare photographs, artifacts and memorabilia. A portion of the museum is dedicated to videotaped interviews with the amazing artists and researchers who developed the rockabilly style. The World Chess Hall of Fame & Sidney Samole Chess Museum

The American Slovenian Polka Foundation, which operates the museum, is committed to preserving and promoting polka music and its history. Originating from Slovenian folk music, the Cleveland-Style polka has the sound of central Europe and was developed more than 100 years ago. National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum

Located in an 1880s silver mining boomtown, this historic museum was created to educate visitors about the heritage and excitement found in the American mining industry. The 71,000-sq. ft. hall of fame was created as a tribute to the many men and women whose endurance and perseverance pioneered the processing of the country’s natural resources. Int’l Tennis Hall of Fame

The non-profit institution is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of tennis, encouraging junior athletes and enshrining the sports heroes and heroines. Located at the Newport Casino, a 19th-century club that housed the first U.S. National Championships in 1881, the complex chronicles the complete history of tennis through exhibits, videos and important artifacts from historic athletes and record-breakers of today. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Located in the center of an 18-acre park, the new Basketball Hall of Fame was designed to attract basketball lovers from all over the world and provide a wide array of basketball-oriented events and activities. The Center Court gives visitors time to shoot, attend live clinics and take part in skill challenges and shooting competitions. The hall is named for James Naismith, who developed the game of basketball while instructing a gym class at the school. He created 13 core rules to organize the sport and gave it its now-familiar name. This unique museum is home to a collection of restored antique wreckers and equipment, collectible toy wreckers, tools and historical pictures of the people who shaped the industry. The constantly changing collection showcases tow trucks from the time of the earliest automobiles. The industry’s first wrecker was created only three miles away from the historic museum at the Ernest Holmes Company. Every year since 1986, the Towing & Recovery Museum has been inducting accomplished men and women from all across the world into its hall of fame. Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

The 32,000-square-foot museum “honors the past, celebrates the present and promotes the future of women's basketball,” while embracing more than 100 years of memories. The hall attracts visitors with the biggest basketball in existence. It is 30 feet tall, weighs 10 tons, and sits on top of a glass staircase that looks like a basketball net. National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame

The museum is located at the Seaboard Air Line Railway’s depot. This Victorian-style station was built in 1900 and remains one of the most photographed structures in the eastern United States. As you enter the aged main lobby, images of women in long dresses and men with top hats in leisure suits flood your mind. The CFMA Cajun Music Hall of Fame and Museum

The Cajun French Music Association, the organization created to establish and maintain this hall, is committed to preserving and promoting the Acadian heritage and music by teaching visitors about the language, traditions and culture of Cajun ancestry. American Police Hall of Fame and Museum

This 50,000-sq. ft. museum is the first of its kind to honor and celebrate the integrity and heroism of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. In the last 44 years, the names and ranks of more than 7,000 men and women of various law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have lined the walls of the respected memorial and hall of fame. Int’l Swimming Hall of Fame

The non-profit museum is the world showplace for swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. Together, the museum, library and archive contain the world’s largest collection of aquatic artifacts, books, manuscripts and literature. World Golf Hall of Fame

The National Corvette Museum and Hall of Fame

Dedicated to America’s premier sports car, the 68,000-sq. ft. museum is stocked with more than 50 classic corvette models and one-of-a-kind concept cars that highlight the history behind the international symbol of U.S. automotive innovation. U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum

Located in the birthplace of organized skiing in the United States, this museum features a theatre, library, gift shop and artifact showcase. The Great Hall is filled with photographs and brief biographies of all the 325 inductees of the hall of fame. In addition to a full collection of ski artifacts and memorabilia, the hall also has a variety of antique ski lifts, skimobiles and gondolas. The museum features a must see fashion show of ski apparel from the early 20th Century to the mid-70s, as well as the first mechanized snow grooming equipment. Automotive Hall of Fame and Henry Ford Museum

This museum does more than simply display artifacts for guests. It teaches visitors about the lives of all the special individuals who have fostered the automotive industry during the last 100 years. Designed to be a “people place,” the hall focuses on the accomplished people who made an impact on the motor vehicle industry. The hall’s mission is to create an inspiring educational atmosphere for its guests and to promote learning and understanding. This 50,000-sq. ft., 3-story history museum takes visitors through “Ten-Pin Alley,” on a journey through 5,000 years of bowling history. The extensive collection includes computer databases, bowling pin cars, the world famous Mettlach steins and even classic 50’s team shirts. The American Bowling Congress honors its inductees with individually created statues, while inductees of the Women’s International Bowling Congress are celebrated with original oil portraits, displayed in the museum. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum

Located on the grounds of the amazing Motor Speedway, the hall displays about 75 vehicles at all times throughout the year. It also features a timeline of the equipment and methods used for timing and scoring the Indianapolis 500 from the very first race to the races of today. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

This musical hot-spot is on the shore of Lake Erie is a compilation of cutting-edge interactive exhibits, films, videos and priceless one-of-a-kind musical artifacts. Designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei, this structure is as daring on the outside as it is on the inside. Pro Football Hall of Fame

Trapshooting Hall of Fame and Museum

The highlight of the museum is its “Shrine to Anglers” attraction, which is a 4.5-story tall steel and fiberglass structure, designed to look like a leaping Muskie. The inside of the fish is a museum and its gaping open mouth forms an observation deck for 20 or more people. The Quilters Hall of Fame

The hall is located in the home of famed quilter Marie Webster, where she lived, created her famous quilts and operated her pattern business. The legendary home of the hall was also recently designated a Landmark of Women’s History. Part of Iowa's premier blues club, Blues on Grand, the hall of fame was formed to recognize the Iowa Blues heritage. The hall is located in the Horse and Mule Barns, a stable built in the 1860’s that was the busiest horse and mule trading center in the area during World War I.
