Fly-In Fishing Destinations: 12 Fishing Resorts That Are Sure To Satisfy Your Appetite
by Carrie Miner
Naturalist Henry David Thoreau once penned the phrase "Shall I go to heaven or a-fishing?" a question other devoted anglers may have asked themselves from time to time.
For many, the two are inseparable. But casting the first line, catching the most fish, and chasing the lure of shimmering scales are only part of the promise presented by an afternoon on the banks of a shady creek. Just being in these isolated areas can be fulfilling in its own right and getting away from it all has never been easier.
We've selected a dozen premier fishing destinations, ranging from remote outposts to fashionable resorts, all of which can be ideally accessed by general aviation airplane.
So whether you're seeking family fun and outdoor adventure or quiet solitude and trophy sport fishing, load up your tackle and get geared up for a heavenly time. Summer never looked so good.
Gaston's White River Resort
This renowned Arkansas resort takes the lead as favorite fly-in fishing destination for private pilots. It is known for its rainbow and brown trout, and because the White River stays temperate year-round, the resort is perfect for both fly-fishing and spin casting.
Located in north central Arkansas' Ozark Mountains, Gaston's White River Resort offer anglers riverfront cottages, boat rentals, a tackle shop, a tennis court, a swimming pool, children's playground and two nature trails.
And then of course there's the fishing. The White River, renowned as one of North America's best trout streams, is famous for record sized rainbow and brown trout. And upstream, at Bull Shoals Lake, you can cast a line for bass, crappie and catfish.
Gaston's White River Resort opened in 1958 and is still in the family. The resort caters to generation after generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
Pilots set down on the resort's 3,200-foot Bermuda grass airstrip at Gaston's Airport [3M0] and can call ahead to arrange for baggage to be picked up by resort personnel.
The resort's restaurant, located near the airstrip, is a destination in itself. The comprehensive menu offers hearty meals served with panoramic river views.
For breakfast you can fuel up with steak and eggs or hot cakes and sausage. Lunch can be anything from breaded pork chops served with applesauce to hickory smoked barbeque ribs and dinner entrees include such mouth watering selections as barbequed Cornish hen, broiled rib eye steak and stuffed shrimp.
Best of all, for lunch or dinner you can always hand your catch over to the chef for one of Gaston's trout specialties, complete with homemade coleslaw, hushpuppies and hot buttered rolls. It doesn't get much better than this.
