Angling For The Big One
For a sport where luck comes and goes with the tides, fishing lore wouldn't be complete without its own litany of rituals, charms and superstitions.

For instance, age-old superstitious belief dictates that you should never keep count of the number of fish caught, never put the catch net in the water before the first fish is caught and never sit on an upside down bucket or your luck will run out.
Then, of course, there is the slippery subject of lucky charms - lucky flies, lucky rods, lucky hats, lucky floats, lucky tackle and so on. After all, no one wants to come home skunked.

However, you may want to add a few extra tips to your tackle box of fishing lore courtesy of The Old Farmer's Almanac. After all, it never hurts to give Lady Luck a helping hand.
  • Hit the water one hour before and one hour after high and low tides.
  • Cast your line for the morning and evening rise — just after sunup and sundown.
  • Fish are more inclined to feed when the barometer is steady or on the rise.
  • Time your fly fishing with a hatch of flies — the most common being caddis and mayflies.
  • The almanac claims that you'll have a better chance of catching your limit when the breeze is coming from the west rather than from the north or east.
  • And, last but not least, The Old Farmer's Almanac says that the best days for fishing start on the day the moon is new and continue through to the full moon. With that in mind, the best days for the rest of 2005 would be July 6-21, August 4-19, September 3-17, October 3-17, November 1-15, December 1-15 and December 30-31.
