We’ve selected 10 top destinations in the Caribbean and coastal North America that are perfect retreats for GA pilots and their families, offering amenities for every taste, from golf links to kids’ wading pools, scuba diving to game fishing, shopping to magical sunsets.

Our selections reflect a desire for variety, both in location, activities and atmosphere. Bahamian and Little Cayman resorts tempt us with their sea breezes, white beaches, underwater wonders and barefoot-casual ambience. The coastal North American resorts boast unique regional landscape and attractions. Spas, golf, tennis, boating and special kid-friendly activities are all part of the mix.

For the most part, once you’ve settled in at any of these destinations, there’ll be no need to leave your cozy retreat. Girl on BeachAt resorts where local attractions beyond walking distance might pique your interest, options include bicycling, public transportation or car rentals. Whichever direction you choose to navigate, have fun!

The Islands
If your Bahamian or other Caribbean destination is not a port of entry, you may need to make a stop in Nassau to go through customs. Note: Not all island airstrips have fuel. AOPA members can consult www.aopa.org or call 800.USA.AOPA for help with international flights and Cuban fly-over regulations in conjunction with trips to the Cayman Islands.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club
Exumas, Bahamas
Just 75 miles from Nassau sits a remote, unspoiled island, less than two square miles overall, that’s been home to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club and its 18-slip marina since 1956. Scuba Diving at Staniel Cay Yacht ClubCasual, comfortable and blessed with gorgeous turquoise waters and brilliant sunshine, the resort couldn’t be further removed from any reminders of the daily grind. Seven charming oceanfront cottages are all newly renovated and redecorated, each with one bedroom and a balcony overlooking the water. The Clubhouse restaurant serves three meals a day in a mix of Bahamian and Continental cuisine. Sample the conch fritters, homemade island bread and key lime pie. A stroll along the beach takes you to a tiny Bahamian village with about 80 full-time residents, a church, post office, library, three small retail shops and a marine supply store. There are no golf courses on the island, but there are golf carts for trips to secluded beaches and coves where you can snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Experience the excitement of deep sea fishing or gently paddle a kayak along the shore. Scuba enthusiasts can bring their own equipment and hire island guides for diving adventures.
Airstrip: 3,030 feet (MYES), a half-mile from resort with complimentary pickup by golf cart. Pilots who fly in receive a 20 percent discount.

or test your deep-sea fishing skills against the grouper, snapper, marlin, tuna and wahoo that inhabit the coral heads of Pittstown. For immediate gratification, join the Spearfishing Picnic: You catch the fish and the resort’s guides grill it for lunch over an open fire. Landlubbers can comb the white sand beaches (stop to inspect tidal pools for seashells), rent bicycles for a ride to Bird Rock Lighthouse or Albert Town, the island’s "haunted village," play volleyball or shuffleboard, go birdwatching, or just laze the day away in a hammock slung between two palms. Twelve tropical, recently renovated oceanfront cottages await your stay. Enjoy Bahamian/American cuisine in the quaint mid-18th century dining room that once housed the oldest post office in the Western hemisphere.
Airstrip: 2,000-foot strip at the resort, or Crooked Island International (MYCI), a 3,500-foot strip 25 minutes away with complimentary pickup service.
