Nature lovers will enjoy a trip to the Padre Island National Seashore. This is one of the longest sections of undeveloped barrier island in the world. Since it is a major flyway for migrating birds, it is also a bird-watching hotspot. The Laguna Madre, which separates the island from the mainland, is one of only six lagoons in the world that is hypersaline, which means it is saltier than the ocean. Dolphins make their home year round here and eco tours with marine biologists will inform and entertain.

Building sandcastles is a favorite pastime and an activity that is taken very seriously; indeed, South Padre Island is the Sandcastle Capital of the World. You too can become a sand sculptor. Lessons are available from a variety of instructors who will share their secret techniques and have you creating masterpieces on the beach.

Whatever activity you choose, you'll have many warm memories to take back to the cold north. However, be aware that South Padre Island is still a spring break destination, with the invasion beginning in early March.

Mojave Resort, Palm Desert, California Cool nights and warm days are the norm at this charming, desert boutique hotel. Fly into the Palm Springs International Airport (KPSP) and rent a car for the 25 minute scenic ride to Palm Desert.

Shaded by palm and citrus trees, the 24 guest rooms and suites of the Mojave Resort are a lush oasis in the midst of the Coachella Valley.

Each room is inspired by the glamour of the 1940s. Even the mini bar is stocked with "retro snacks." Remember NeHi sodas, Necco wafers, Cracker Jacks, and Sugar Babies? A small complimentary breakfast is served, which includes fresh citrus from the surrounding trees.

Lunch and dinner choices are just a short block from the Mojave. El Paseo is known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert, and Palm Desert is known as the cultural and retail center of the communities that make up Palm Springs. Shops, art galleries, and a wide range of restaurants are available to resort guests.

During the day, soak up the desert sun by the pool; in the evening, enjoy a spa treatment under the stars at one of the resort's outdoor cabanas. This is the place to kick back and indulge yourself while most of the country is dealing with winter weather.

This is also the place to get out and enjoy the magnificent natural resources of this unique environment. Hike, bike, climb a mountain, ride a horse, or hop aboard a hot-air balloon to see the breathtaking vistas of the valley and surrounding mountains. Try one of the popular Jeep eco tours for an off-road adventure complete with a naturalist for your guide. This is an area full of geological wonders, unique plant and animal life, and unspoiled, rugged countryside. Along with lounging by the pool, make time for the Joshua Tree National Park, San Andreas Fault, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, and a game of golf at one of the area's 100 golf courses.

Rosarito Beach Hotel, Baha California, Mexico
South of the border, about 25 miles from Brown Field Municipal Airport (KSDM), is the family-owned-and-operated Rosarito Beach Hotel. For 81 years, this has been the place dignitaries and celebrities have come to de-stress and leave their cares behind. This Spanish Colonial style hotel has 280 rooms, most with ocean views.

If you're into peace and quiet, take a stroll along the wide beach and feel the warm sand between your toes. Or enjoy a relaxing treatment at Casa Playa Spa from the hotel's highly trained staff.
