Perspectives

Growing The Aviation Community
Remember when you first started flying? You couldn’t wait to get your license and take your best friend, your spouse, maybe a parent on that first trip with just you at the controls.

We remember. We also remember the months of training, and the frequent weather delays that made those months seem like years. We remember the time away from work, away from family and friends. And most of all, we remember the questions posed by frustrated non-pilot family members, usually along the lines of, “You have to practice landings again? I thought you did that last week!”

Let’s face it: for most new aviators, the challenges of learning to fly are complicated
by the inconvenience flight training brings to our personal and professional lives. So this month, we’re introducing a new department that is written specifically for the new aviator, focusing on issues that concern those new to flying — yet we’ll approach those issues with the same, upbeat, non-technical voice that you have grown to love.

Also, we will be sending magazine copies to more than 400 flight schools around the country, and building a database of student pilots who will receive individually-addressed copies of this magazine. We hope this effort will bring the joys of general
aviation travel home to more new pilots and their families, and in some small way help grow the aviation community by talking about fun, upbeat things you can
do with your airplane once you complete your training.

For example, if you’re heading to Oshkosh, you can stop by the Columbia static display and have your picture taken for an Aviator’s Guide cover. Our photo artist will put your image next to a Columbia 400, the world’s fastest airplane, on a complimentary magazine cover for you to take home with you.

If you’re not going to Oshkosh, you can still share in the excitement. Just visit us online at aviatorsguide.com/survey and fill out our third-annual reader survey. Three lucky winners will win one of three really neat prizes. Top prize is a threenight stay at the beautiful Resort at Glade Springs, in Daniels, WV. Second prize is a pair of his-and-hers headsets from Clarity Aloft, and the third prize is a portable oxygen system from SkyOx. Fill out the survey to win!

So to all the new aviators who have joined us, welcome to the ranks of those who use their airplanes to travel and enjoy life!
