Taking Flight Into Summer
Even aviators who fly all year-round hold a special place in their hearts for summer. The days are long and warm, and aside from a few pesky thunderstorms, you can usually find good flying weather just about anywhere you want to go.

Better still, summer brings vacation time, for children and adults, which makes now the perfect time to pack the family or that special someone into an airplane and go wherever the wind and full tanks will take you.

With so many places to go, how do you choose? To help celebrate summer flying, our team went all-out in this issue to bring you ideas and information on as many exciting and fun places to fly to as possible.

If you want to work on your tan or just love the feel of warm sand squeezing between your toes, don’t miss our picks of 10 top fly-in beach resorts. Destination expert Janice Rosenberg wouldn’t settle for a cracked runway next to a hot-dog stand. She discovered unique destinations that feature a full-service resort, easy access to a runway and, of course, miles and miles of sand.

We sent intrepid destination expert Carrie Miner off to Seattle to detail how much else this left-coast city has to offer besides coffee and sleepless nights.

And if you’re heading to this year’s EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., we’ve found some interesting, non-aviation places for you to visit that will round out that great family vacation.

From the sublime Grand Hotel on Michigan’s Mackinac Island to the ridiculous SPAM Museum in Austin, Minn., we’ve scoured the midwest to find a diverse mix of destinations sure to please every member of the flying family.

And speaking of flying family, how many of us will be filing our summer flight plans with passengers who have never traveled in a general aviation airplane before? Save them – and yourself – the anxiety that can come with a first cross-country flight by reading Amy Loboda’s advice on how to make that maiden voyage fun and engaging for everyone on board, including the first-timers.
