Spring is in the Air
Ah, behold the months of May and June. Its that tender time of year, tucked between Spring and Summer, when the air is cool and fresh, the trees burst into bloom, and pilots everywhere get the itch to go flyin.
With icing season well behind us a thunderstorm season not yet here, now is the ideal time for cross-country general aviation travel. In fact, the biggest problem many of us face this time of year is deciding where to go.
Luckily, weve got answers. We sent our intrepid explorer Janice Rosenberg to the wilds of Alaska to find the best places to see and stay in this remote northwest state. Alaska is one area of the country where general aviation is a way of life. One out of every 54 residents has a pilots certificate, and tundra tires and floats are as common as snow mobiles.
Janice tells us that now and the upcoming summer months are the best time of year to fly to Alaska. But unlike most destinations, which can be seen and explored in a few days, a journey to Alaska requires at least two weeks, preferably three or four. For many pilots, a trip to Alaska is the adventure of a lifetime, making it well worth the time to plan your expedition.
At the exact opposite end of the country, Carrie Miner has found the ideal golfing and beach destination at Hilton Head, SC. In between, weve also found numerous exciting places to stop along the way, including a fishing resort with its own runway, and even an exclusive couples resort where you and your significant other can escape to rekindle the romance.
And speaking of your significant other, how do general aviation couples translate a relationship on the ground into a successful partnership in the cockpit?
We asked Women In Aviations Editor-in-Chief, Amy Laboda to explore how the relationship you and your partner or spouse have with each other fits into the cockpit, and the answers were surprising. Good cockpit management, the key to any flying situation, starts on the ground.
And finally, wed like to offer a big congrats to Jose Gibert, winner of Diamonds How Well Do You Know The DA-42 Twin Star Quiz. Jose, an instrument-rated pilot from Vero Beach, FL, will enjoy three relaxing days at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
So whether youre an adventurer or golfer, a pilot or a non-pilot passenger, keep reading Aviators Guide so we can help you make the most of this flying season.
