Chicago, Illinois:
Chicago Sings the Blues
by Sean Fulton
Every magazine puts together an editorial calendar highlighting stories it plans to cover in each issue for the following year.
When we put our editorial calendar for this year together in back August 2002, we planned to cover Chicago in this issue. And why not? Chicagos a hell of a town.
But at the end of April, I was in an FBO checking the weather on the Internet when I loaded up the AOPA web site and saw pictures of the destruction of Meigs Field. It was obscene. Just a month earlier, Joanne and I had passed up a chance to do our much anticipated first Meigs landing on a business trip because of a tight schedule. I knew that landing would probably never happen.

Chicago is a truly beautiful city, one of the most noble and elegant in the mid-west. With its majestic downtown runway on the lake, it was an unbeatable destination. But now, Chicago is a painful battle cry in the continuing war between general aviation and those who are jealous of the freedom we enjoy.
For that reason we have decided not to write a feature story about Chicago in this issue. Many organizations have proposed boycotting Chicago for business and personal travel. While we support the boycott in principle, we dont really expect our readers to lose jobs or business prospects by not attending meetings and conventions in Chicago. If you want to jump on the Friends of Meigs Field bandwagon, you can sign an online petition to the Chicago City Council, requesting hearings on reopening Meigs Field, and supporting the Bessie Coleman Skypark and Chicago Air Museum.
And as we put together our editorial calendar for 2004, lets hope that no other destination needs to be taken off our list.
